Here are a few interesting facts about sewing, cloth and materials that we hope will get you interested in this fascinating and useful craft.<\/p>\n

Cotton lasts for 100 years.<\/strong> The expected life span of cotton fabric is about 100 years. If you look after it it could be even longer. Cotton fabric has been found in many archaeological sites.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s buttons are not on the right side .<\/strong> Women\u2019s buttons are sewn onto the left side of the garment. The reason for this is that buttons were very expensive and only wealthy women with domestic help could afford them. So to make it easier for the help to button up they were on the \u2018wrong\u2019 side.<\/p>\n

Zippers were invented in 1893.<\/strong> Yup! they are way over a hundred year old now. Initially they were only used on shoes and boots to make wearing them faster. But slowly they gained favour and made their way onto garments.<\/p>\n

The print Calico comes from the word Calcutta.<\/strong> The first cotton prints in America were called calicoes and were made in around 1780. They were named Calico, after the city of Calcutta, India, where these hand-woven printed fabrics were made.<\/p>\n

Buttons on sleeves were Napoleon Bonaparte\u2019s idea.<\/strong> First seen during the time he ruled, buttons on sleeves are now taken for granted. Rumour has it that Napoleon did not want his soldiers to wipe their noses on their sleeves so he told his uniform makers to sew button on the ends.<\/p>\n

Sewing was one of the first skills Homo Sapiens learnt.<\/strong> Archaeologists believe that people used to sew together fur, hide, skin and bark for clothing as far back as 25,000 years ago.<\/p>\n

Early needles were not made of metal.<\/strong> Sewing needles found at a lot of ancient archaeologist sites were made of bone and ivory. Metal needles came into existence much later in human history.<\/p>\n

4000 kinds of sewing machine.<\/strong> By the 20th century more than 4000 different types of sewing machines had been invented. Most of these slowly got lost in time as they were riddled with many problems. Only the machines that made sewing simple, fun and easy survived.<\/p>\n
